Curate Yourself

I would like to introduce a poem by Johann Wolfgang Goethe‘Erlking’. I depicts the death of a child assailed by a supernatural being, the Erlking or Erlkoenig.

This poem has been set to music by several composers, my favorite one by Franz Schubert.

Who rides there so late through the night dark and drear?
The father it is, with his infant so dear;
He holdeth the boy tightly clasp'd in his arm,
He holdeth him safely, he keepeth him warm.

"My son, wherefore seek'st thou thy face thus to hide?"
"Look, father, the Erl-King is close by our side!
Dost see not the Erl-King, with crown and with train?"
"My son, 'tis the mist rising over the plain."

"Oh, come, thou dear infant! oh come thou with me!
For many a game I will play there with thee;
On my strand, lovely flowers their blossoms unfold,
My mother shall grace thee with garments of gold."

"My father, my father, and dost thou not hear
The words that the Erl-King now breathes in mine ear?"
"Be calm, dearest child, 'tis thy fancy deceives;
'Tis the sad wind that sighs through the withering leaves."

"Wilt go, then, dear infant, wilt go with me there?
My daughters shall tend thee with sisterly care;
My daughters by night their glad festival keep,
They'll dance thee, and rock thee, and sing thee to sleep."

"My father, my father, and dost thou not see,
How the Erl-King his daughters has brought here for me?"
"My darling, my darling, I see it aright,
'Tis the aged grey willows deceiving thy sight."

"I love thee, I'm charm'd by thy beauty, dear boy!
And if thou'rt unwilling, then force I'll employ."
"My father, my father, he seizes me fast,
For sorely the Erl-King has hurt me at last."

The father now gallops, with terror half wild,
He grasps in his arms the poor shuddering child;
He reaches his courtyard with toil and with dread, –
The child in his arms finds he motionless, dead.

I very much like this poem, due to it’s mysterious content and this appearance of the ‘Erlking’, whom I read as ‘Death’ or the devil.

I have illustrated a piece for this poem, because I am so inspired by it:

The influence of Graphic Novels

Max und Moritz – a graphic novel by Wilhelm Busch

I took the liberty to read Max and Moritz by Wilhelm Busch for this assignment. It is a classic tale of two boys playing pranks on their superiors. It has become a proud part of the culture in German-speaking countries. Even today parents like to read these tales to their children in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The two leering faces are synonymous with mischief, and appear almost logo-like in advertising and even graffiti.

This novel had and still has such a big impact on my culture that it has quite the influence on us.

-       It occurs that young German couples name their boy twins Max and Moritz respectively, depending on their individual sense of humor and the intended parenting.
-       Max and Moritz is the first published original foreign children’s book in Japan.
-       Max and Moritz became the forerunners to the comic strip. The story inspired Rudolph Dirks to create The Katzenjammer Kids

I enjoyed reading and looking at the drawings of this tale by Wilhelm Busch back when I was little but just as much today.

Another interesting illustrated book is a Charlie Hebdo - Mohammad Cartoon Book. Due to recent terrible actions that are happening in this world, this is an interesting comic to read.

McLuhan – How Media and advertising affects us

Global village – we all need to work together

McLuhan is known for coining the expressions the medium is the message and the global village, and for predicting the World Wide Web almost thirty years before it was invented.
Our society is affected by media and advertising every single day. We are so used to it that it can be called an addiction to many individuals nowadays.

For example how does Television affect us?

-       It removes people’s identity.
-       It is very addictive – take it away and people develop symptoms of hangover
-       Channels – There are so many to chose from
-       Inner Tripping
-       The speed of light

I think media has affected every one of us in a way. There are good and bad things that come with it. One the one hand we get to be informed about the world’s latest happenings and politics. On the other hand we get so many unimportant messages pounded into our brains everywhere we go or look, that the thought of it is a bit sickening to me. I like to stay in contact with all of my friends through social media but I think there is a line that we should not be crossing. If we can’t go on a walk without our phone in hand at all times I think it is a concern. Maybe something to ponder upon and think about the next time we go out in nature and just want to ‘listen to the silence’.
