Adaptation – Point of View – Costume Desig

Lately I am very interested in Hitchcock and I would like to talk about the Costume design characteristics in his films and what makes his creations so recognizable.

Hitchcock has a very poetic way of realizing his films, nothing is there for no reason, everything is plotted out and observed by his keen eye for design, color, shots, camera angles, music and so forth. He is a master at creating a worlds that are inspiring other film directors all over the world to this present day, such as De Palma who I have just seen a documentary on during the Film Festival here in Sarasota. Film directors of this present day like to pay homage to brilliant filmmakers such as Hitchcock.

In particular I would like to talk about the leading lady in his films. It is always a strong, beautiful blonde with perfect skin, hair and sense of fashion. Usually Hitchcock likes to dress them in classy outfits, such as skirts, blouses, dresses and heels. He does not shy away from having his leading lady run away from dangerous scenes in ‘The Birds’ while in a perfect costume. If I were the Costume designer in his films, I wouldn’t dream of doing anything differently. All the fabrics and cuts are flawless and the colors are muted in a very melancholic and poetic way.
