McLuhan – How Media and advertising affects us

Global village – we all need to work together

McLuhan is known for coining the expressions the medium is the message and the global village, and for predicting the World Wide Web almost thirty years before it was invented.
Our society is affected by media and advertising every single day. We are so used to it that it can be called an addiction to many individuals nowadays.

For example how does Television affect us?

-       It removes people’s identity.
-       It is very addictive – take it away and people develop symptoms of hangover
-       Channels – There are so many to chose from
-       Inner Tripping
-       The speed of light

I think media has affected every one of us in a way. There are good and bad things that come with it. One the one hand we get to be informed about the world’s latest happenings and politics. On the other hand we get so many unimportant messages pounded into our brains everywhere we go or look, that the thought of it is a bit sickening to me. I like to stay in contact with all of my friends through social media but I think there is a line that we should not be crossing. If we can’t go on a walk without our phone in hand at all times I think it is a concern. Maybe something to ponder upon and think about the next time we go out in nature and just want to ‘listen to the silence’.
